Presentation « Keeping your batteries cool in power applications »
In power applications, effective thermal management is vital to ensure the performance and longevity of batteries. Various solutions are employed to keep batteries cool and maintain optimal operating temperatures. In this lecture Mark Small of Boyd will discuss how multi-component cold plates, with their circulating cooling fluid, provide efficient heat dissipation. Controlled Atmosphere Brazing (CAB) and Vacuum Aluminum Brazing (VAB) techniques are used to join aluminum cold plates, ensuring a strong and leak-free system. Additionally, aluminum tube cold plates enable double-sided cooling, particularly useful for tightly stacked batteries. These thermal management solutions play a crucial role in enhancing performance, efficiency, and reliability, enabling batteries to deliver optimal power output in demanding applications.

Why visit Power Electronics & Energy Storage Event?
Power electronics and energy storage have many intersections and are often closely linked. During the combined edition of the event, you benefit from the available expertise in both power electronics and energy storage. The wide range of the market, including users, developers, suppliers, and knowledge institutions, come together at the Power Electronics and Energy Storage event. Visions, experiences, and knowledge are exchanged among peers. In addition to the exhibition floor, there is also a seminar programme.

Power component innovations at the event
We highlight some of our power component innovations that will be shown at this event.
– Isabellenhütte’s IVT3.0Pro: High precision current measurement device with isolation resistance monitoring
– Sensata’s GigaFuse is the world’s only hermetically sealed electromechanical fuse.
– HV Wooding: New powder coated busbars improve the quality and performance of electric vehicle busbars.
– Mitsubishi’s HV100 Dual-type X-Series HVIGBT: superior power, efficiency and reliability for large industrial equipment such as railways and electric power systems.

Isabellenhütte’s IVT3.0Pro: High precision current measurement device with isolation resistance monitoring

The IVT 3 is a compact high precision current measurement device, which is built on a platform concept where functional components can be added to adapt to many different use cases. The Pro version supports insulation resistance monitoring and 3 or 6 voltage measurement channels. The IVT 3 series is developed according to ISO 26262:2018 (Road vehicles – Functional safety). More information can be found on the datasheet.

Sensata’s GigaFuse is the world’s only hermetically sealed electromechanical fuse.

GigaFuse is the world’s only hermetically sealed electromechanical fuse designed for high voltage and high power fuse application requirements. The GigaFuse is a bi-directional device capable of handling system voltages up to 1000V and features both passive and active triggering options. This new design significantly reduces system resistance, eliminates thermal aging, and significantly reduces install time, system complexity, and cost. More information can be found on the datasheet.

HV Wooding: New powder coated busbars improve the quality and performance of electric vehicle busbars.

Customers in the electric and hybrid vehicle market tend to specify their requirements in terms of kilovolt rating and insulation performance, not coating material or application method. Existing coating methods were difficult to control, with a high level of component rejections due to the coating specification and application failing to meet requirements. A new coating method needed to be produced, resulting in busbars with a consistent specified performance. With the demand for busbars expected to increase significantly as road transport is electrified, an optimised and automated manufacturing process would give HV Wooding a significant competitive advantage in a rapidly expanding international market. “The results have allowed us to better understand the relationship between the dielectric strength of the busbar and the coating thickness produced by the processes investigated” says Paul Allen, Business Development Director at H V Wooding. “Even before the project finished, we secured new business as a result of the improved control of the busbar coating process. This contract has allowed us to invest in a nickel electroplating production line to enhance our production capacity and capability”.

Mitsubishi’s HV100 Dual-type X-Series HVIGBT: superior power, efficiency and reliability for large industrial equipment such as railways and electric power systems.

Mitsubishi Electric has announced that it will begin shipping samples of a new HV100 dual-type X-Series high-voltage insulated gate bipolar transistor (HVIGBT) module on May 31st, offering superior power, efficiency and reliability in inverter systems for large industrial equipment such as railways and electric power systems. The dual-type module, which achieves 4.5kV withstand voltage and 10.2kVrms dielectric strength, is rated at 450A, which is believed to be unmatched among 4.5kV silicon HVIGBT modules.
